Nicolas the Fireman, if you call 112
Very kindly, Nicolas Ughetto agree to answer our questions:
Where are you from?
One side of my family is from Val d’isere, the other from the north of Italy (Piedmont)
At what time do you start?
We are on duty from 6pm to 6 am.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy helping people when in difficulty
Do you train regularly?
We do have regular training sessions, we have to have a medical check, and a good level of fitness.
What don’t you like in your work?
I don’t enjoy being woken up in the middle of the night because somebody has drunk too much, it happens occasionally and we have to go to Bourg Saint Maurice to the hospital so doctors can keep an eye on the individual.
What is the worst sort of day?
When an intervention ends badly.
What make you laugh in your work?
The circumstances can be very funny, like a call for a bird unable to take off from a tree (it was tangled in a little string) or this guy who took refuge in a tree, chased by a fox… It is difficult to keep a strait face!
A good memory?
To save a person, to know you have avoided a catastrophe, made the difference in between death and life. Sometimes we have the pleasure to see these people again when they come to thank us for our intervention. When a baby arrives before we reach the hospital, it is always a good memory.
Do you have an other job?
I am a buyer for the commune from paper clips to buses, benches, street lights…
Where do you spend your holidays?
In the south of France near a pool or near the sea.
If you had a wish?
We intervene 500 to 600 times during the season, it would be nice if it was better spread during the year.
Do you have a hobby?
Fishing, I forget it all!
Nicolas lives in Val d’Isere, is married with 3 children.
