Spring Snow Tips
April 9th, 2010
- As the support layer weakens, widen your stance to increase the surface area.
-Think light! Imagine you are skiing on eggshells.
- All movements must be smooth and progressive. Abruptness or over-edging can cause you to break through.
- Retract to relieve the snow of pressure when initiating the turn.
- The pivoting must be positive. Project, “uncoil” and turn the feet.
- Stay tall and patient. Any early down motion will over edge the skis. Do nothing to stop the pivoting, let the skis slide.
- There must be some side slip in each turn, the more fragile the snow, the more side slip is necessary.

Meet Orson the avalanche dog
April 5th, 2010
When the dog reaches the age of one, he goes with his master to a “training camp” organized (by ANENA www.anena.org) for 3 weeks, locating and digging victims out of the snow in an environment which is as realistic as possible . This is achieved by burying real people in pockets of air specially organized under the snow! The dogs have to have a good nose and must not be too large so they can be carried on their masters’ backs to reach the avalanche site. “Border Collies are perfect for these reasons although we might try with shooting dogs. Once trained, the dogs can easily differentiate the scent of a human being from the snow.”
“I love my work with the dogs and within a team and the dogs are a very good public relation’s tool, they naturally attract people and specially the ladies who cannot resist stroking a beautiful dog!
Sylvain and Orson make a really friendly working team.
