Photography
Jamie Robertson, a professional photographer based in Val d’Isere gives us some key points to obtain the best photos of your skiing holidays.
1/ Take lots of photos. It’s not unusual for me to take over 1,000 photos during a day’s shooting. Of course most of them get deleted. If I get 5 really good ones it has been a very good day!
2/ Go low. Especially if your subject is going to be airborne, getting down low can make a photograph far more impressive and nothing like a naff holiday snap.
3/ Avoid the middle of the frame. Try to put the horizon and/or your subject a third of the way across the frame vertically, horizontally or preferably both. Notice, in the last picture the subject (the sun) is on the ‘power point’ (1/3rd along, 1/3rd up). Also, never chop off legs or hats, don’t you just hate it when somebody takes your photo and chops off your feet – how rude!
4/ Understand the histogram. A little more advanced this one. In harsh mountain light, even a perfectly exposed picture on the screen of your camera can seem over or under exposed. Read up on and learn to use the “histogram”, it never lies! Basically, your histogram should look like a mountain which reaches the bottom of the screen at both sides.
5/ – “Get organised. You can take hundreds of stunning photos, but they are no good to you if you can’t get your hands on them. I like to use Photoshop Lightroom and give all my photos a star rating out of 5. Very few of them get a 5. I can quickly search for and enjoy the best photos of a season, month or day.”
